What is a CAS?

You have probably seen the acronym CAS if you have been shopping around for a calculator. “CAS” stands for computer algebra system. For a calculator to have a CAS means that it can perform algebraic operations like, factoring, solving, and give exact simplified answers with variables. When did the CAS come out?

Computer algebra systems have been around for many years. The first CAS in a calculator was in the HP-28 back in 1987. But the concept did not become popular until much later when Texas Instruments introduced the TI-Nspire CX CAS. The TI-Nspire CX CAS is still Texas Instruments’ most advanced calculator today.

What calculators have a CAS?

Although the computer algebra system is a very useful feature, most graphing calculators do not have them. This is likely because most classes do not require them and in some cases, would prefer if the students didn’t have them. Below are a few popular calculators that have a CAS and some that don’t.

You have probably heard of the TI-84 Plus, the most popular graphing calculator out there. But as you can see, it does not have a computer algebra system. If you want a calculator with computer algebra system, you will likely have to know what you are looking for before you buy.

For some people, like lower level math students, a CAS calculator is not recommended. For example, and algebra II student could do the majority of his or her class on a CAS calculator without learning a lot of the material. This being said, these calculators are helpful convenient for students above calculus I.

That being said calculators like the TI-nspire CX CAS are allowed on the SAT and can give the test taker an advantage. Having one of these calculators on a test like the SAT will keep you from making algebra mistakes, as well as save you a lot of time.
